Instability of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation: Observations, Modelling and Relevance to Present and Future

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has changed dramatically during the glacial–interglacial cycle. One leading hypothesis for these abrupt changes is thermohaline instability. Here, I review recent progress towards understanding instability in both observations and modelling. Proxy records available seem to favor as cause of climate glacial–deglacial period because deep North water mass AMOC seemed have before climate. However, most fully Coupled General Models (CGCMs) so far exhibit monostable AMOC, (1) models failed simulate unless they are forced by an change external forcing and, (2) shown opposite freshwater convergence from current observations. This potential model bias stability leaves projection future uncertain.
